Robert Cusack Jobson 1911-1999
Bob Jobson was a gentleman, a gentleman of very many talents. Born in rural Dublin he was reared on a farm in the hills over Saggart. He attended school in Dublin and then boarded in the UK. By the time his talent for art was becoming apparent he was already an exceptional cricketer and held the junior school high jump record in the UK. Having left school he traveled Europe and on his return settled into working life as a stockbroker in Dublin City.
But art and nature was never far away for him, A man of the outdoors he ingested much of the inspiration for his paintings from wildfowling excursions on the Shannon and visits to the Slobs in Wexford. A keen horseman, hunting and fly fishing were very dear to him. He was also a most stylistic golfer who played in The Irish Open and was an honorary member of Saint Andrews.
Throughout his life Bob lived in many parts of Ireland, His mother Kathleen Cusack from Abbeyville House near Malahide died when he was just two and a half years old. Later in life he lived in Blackrock, where he ran a market garden and then at The Old Glebe, Newcastle, County Dublin where he created a most magnificent garden within its grounds. He then lived for a time in Sligo, painting, shooting and fishing. Bob spent his final years living near Fethard County Co Tipperary where he continued to paint and have various exhibitions one of which was at The Pump House on The North Slob nature reserve in Wexford – It was there his family chose to build a birdwatching hide as a commemoration to him after his death.
